Communication Disorders












​As experts in communication, SLPs diagnose a variety of disorders in the areas of language, articulation, voice, fluency, swallowing/feeding, and social communication. Communication disorders can be either developmental (from birth) or acquired. It is common for children to demonstrate difficulties in one or more areas. LANGUAGE DELAYS & DISORDERS

RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE
The ability to understand language (i.e. following directions, understanding questions, identifying objects, etc)​.
EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE
The ability to express wants/needs (i.e. using sentences to communicate clearly, label items, respond to wh-questions, etc).
SOCIAL COMMUNICATION
Relates to the appropriate use of language in a social setting. Children who have difficulty in this area may present difficulty engaging in conversations, understanding feelings, problem solving, and playing appropriately.
ARTICULATION & PHONOLOGICAL DELAYS/DISORDERS

ARTICULATION
The ability to coordinate oral structures and the respiratory system to put together various sounds to produce words.
PHONOLOGICAL DISORDERS
Occurs when a child cannot be understood due to patterns of errors in their speech (i.e. 'wabbit' for rabbit or 'nack' for snack). When a child demonstrates difficulty producing sounds, it can negatively impact how the child is understood, leading to frustration. SLP's are trained to use a variety of techniques to remediate errors increase your child's ability to be understood. Phonological disorders are different from an articulation delay/disorder.
FLUENCY
A fluency disorder is also known as stuttering. Which typically begins before the age of 5. Therapy aids in implementing of strategies that a child can use to prevent instances of stuttering and increase fluency. Stuttering is characterized by blocks, pauses and repetitions of syllables and/or words. ​Additionally, physical characteristics may be present such as eye blinks and facial grimaces.
